DETROIT — Hundreds of people turned out yesterday for the funeral of a 7-year-old Detroit girl killed in a police raid and were told they must help stop the violence that has recently swept the city. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton gave the eulogy for Aiyana Stanley-Jones, and called on the congregation gathered at Second Ebenezer Church to help stop violence.

Thousands protest proposed state cuts TRENTON — An estimated 25,000 people gathered yesterday near the New Jersey State House to protest Governor Chris Christie’s proposed budget cuts. State Police reported few problems despite the crowd, believed to be one of the largest ever to protest in state history. Christie has called for workers to accept wage freezes, and he has pushed for them to contribute toward their health benefits.
