Trailing, 10-2, going into the ninth, New York scored four times with two outs against Andy Sonnanstine. Joaquin Benoit struck out Juan Miranda with two on for his first save since May 3, 2008, with Texas at Oakland.
Handed a six-run lead by the fourth inning, rookie Wade Davis (4-3) held the Yankees in check. Alex Rodriguez hit his 589th home run and Robinson Cano had four hits for New York (25-15), which has dropped seven of 11 since a six-game winning streak.
Nationals 5, Mets 3 — Angel Pagan hit an inside-the-park home run and started a triple play, but that wasn’t enough for visiting New York to beat Washington.
Pagan became the first player in 55 years to take part in both feats in the same game. Despite his achievements, the Mets lost for the ninth time in 11 games.
Pagan hit the first inside-the-park home run in Nationals Park history in the fourth inning. An inning later, the center fielder’s shoestring catch led to the Mets’ first triple play since 2002.
Tigers 5, Athletics 1 — Justin Verlander pitched a four-hitter, late lineup addition Casper Wells drove in two runs and visiting Detroit beat Oakland, spoiling Dallas Braden’s first appearance at home since throwing the majors’ first perfect game this season.
Blue Jays 3, Mariners 2 — Brett Cecil pitched into the seventh inning and Kevin Gregg hung on for the save as visiting Toronto sent Seattle to its fifth straight loss. Milton Bradley returned to the Mariners and had his fourth two-hit game of the season. He was out for two weeks after asking the team for counseling help to deal with personal and emotional issues.
Braves 5, Reds 4 — Jason Heyward hit an RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning as host Atlanta ended Cincinnati’s four-game winning streak. Atlanta blew a four-run lead in the final two innings before recovering.
Royals 8, Indians 4 — Yuniesky Betancourt hit a three-run double in a five-run ninth inning off Kerry Wood as Kansas City rallied past host Cleveland.
Cubs 4, Phillies 1 — Tom Gorzelanny threw 6 2/3 shutout innings, Starlin Castro and Jeff Baker had RBI singles, and visiting Chicago topped Philadelphia to win its fourth straight.
