Heat take the fifth

For some reason, the New Jersey Nets weren’t ready to let their forgettable season end.

Not in regulation.

Or after one overtime, either.

After that, well, Mario Chalmers decided to put the Nets out of their misery.

Chalmers opened the scoring in the second OT, then found Yakhouba Diawara for a banked-in 3-pointer with 2:27 left, and the Heat pulled away to finally clinch the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating the Nets, 94-86, last night at Miami — handing New Jersey its 70th and final loss of the year.

Miami (47-35), the No. 5 seed for the second straight season, gets the Celtics in the opening round of the playoffs.

Michael Beasley had 25 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out, Chalmers finished with 15, and Dorell Wright and James Jones each scored 11 for Miami, which wasted a 13-point lead in the fourth.

The Heat chose to rest Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem with an array of minor injuries, and Jermaine O’Neal sat while continuing to recover from an ankle problem. None of the issues are expected to affect their availability for Game 1 of the playoffs.

Bulls 98, Bobcats 89 — Chicago clinched the NBA’s last unclaimed playoff spot as Derrick Rose scored 27 points and Joakim Noah added 21 points and 13 rebounds at Charlotte, N.C.

Overcoming numerous injuries, internal strife, key trades, and a horrible stretch early in the season, the Bulls closed the regular season with a three-game winning streak to beat out Toronto for the right to face Eastern Conference top seed Cleveland.

Thunder 114, Grizzlies 105 — Kevin Durant scored 31 points to finish the season as the youngest scoring champion in NBA history, and host Oklahoma City survived a sloppy second half to head into the postseason on a winning note.

Oklahoma City let most of a 27-point lead dwindle before closing out its 50th win of the season. The Thunder will meet the defending NBA champion Lakers in the first round of the playoffs.

Durant, 21, had the scoring title all but locked up after a late-season surge that included three 40-point games in April.

Magic 125, 76ers 111 — Jameer Nelson had 21 points, Vince Carter scored 17, and host Orlando broke the season record for 3-pointers made.

Dwight Howard added 15 points and 12 rebounds to help the Magic finish with 841 from beyond the arc, the NBA’s second-best record, and close the last regular-season game at Amway Arena in style.

Mavericks 96, Spurs 89 — San Antonio made it easy for host Dallas. That won’t happen when they hook up again in a few days.

With Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili getting the night off, the Mavericks needed only a 16-2 run at the end of the first quarter to put themselves on their way to a victory that set up a first-round playoff matchup between the teams.
