Mike Green snapped a third-period tie, Jose Theodore made 23 saves, and the Washington Capitals upstaged US Olympic hero Ryan Miller’s return to Buffalo with a 3-1 victory over the slumping Sabres last night.

Jason Chimera also scored, and Boyd Gordon added an empty-net goal for Washington, which snapped a three-game losing streak in its first game following the Olympic break.

Miller made 37 saves after receiving a 45-second pregame standing ovation from the hometown fans, but he was unable to shake the Sabres out of their slumber.

Buffalo (33-20-9) fell to 1-6-2 in its last nine games, and has won just three times in regulation since Jan. 18, a span of 16 games. Jochen Hecht scored for the Sabres.

Green gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead midway through the third period when he one-timed a shot past Miller from the slot.

Kesler, from the Detroit suburb of Livonia, Mich., got his second goal on the power play 6:35 into the third period. Franzen scored on a power play with 4:47 left.

Panthers 7, Flyers 4 - Michael Frolik scored twice, David Booth had a goal and three assists, and host Florida snapped a season-high seven-game losing streak.

Booth also fought in the first period with Flyers captain Mike Richards, whose open-ice hit in an Oct. 24 game caused a concussion that forced Booth to miss 42 games. It was one of four fights in the period.

Steven Reinprecht, Jason Garrison, and Stephen Weiss added goals for the Panthers, who snapped a streak of 14 games with two goals or fewer. Defenseman Bryan McCabe had three assists and an empty-net goal.

Daniel Briere, Jeff Carter, Ville Leino, and Ryan Parent scored for the Flyers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Blackhawks 5, Oilers 2 - Niklas Hjalmarsson, Dustin Byfuglien, and Jonathan Toews scored in the third period to help host Chicago beat Edmonton for its fifth win in six games.

Marian Hossa and Dave Bolland also scored, Patrick Kane added two assists, and the Blackhawks outshot the Oilers, 47-14. Robert Nilsson and Shawn Horcoff scored for Edmonton. The Oilers have lost three straight and seven of their last eight.

Avalanche 4, Ducks 3 - Matt Duchene scored the go-ahead goal with 11:51 to play, Peter Mueller scored in his Avalanche debut, and Colorado snapped Anaheim’s 11-game home winning streak.

Chris Stewart and T.J. Galiardi also scored and Craig Anderson made 31 saves for the Avalanche, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Teemu Selanne scored his 598th NHL goal for the Ducks.

Wild 4, Flames 0 - Niklas Backstrom made 29 saves for his fifth shutout of the season and Mikko Koivu and Andrew Brunette each had a goal and an assist in Minnesota’s victory in Calgary.
