Student dies, 7 hurt in car crash in Va.

PHILADELPHIA - A van carrying a Temple University dance team to a competition in North Carolina crashed in southern Virginia early yesterday, killing one student and injuring seven others. Kammini Ragoopath, 21, of Lansdale, Pa., died after the van veered off Interstate 85 and hit a guardrail in Dinwiddie County, State Police said. Fatima Pervaiz, 20, whose hometown was not available, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Richmond hospital. The driver and five other passengers were taken to a Petersburg hospital with minor injuries.

Linder won’t run for Congress again

ATLANTA - US Representative John Linder announced yesterday that he will retire from Congress after 18 years. The Republican from Gwinnett County made the announcement at the dedication of a new county GOP headquarters. Linder was one of former House speaker Newt Gingrich’s top aides and a fiscal conservative.
