Giants ace Tim Lincecum asked for $13 million in salary arbitration, a record for a player eligible for the first time, and pitcher Felix Hernandez closed in on a five-year, $78 million contract with the Mariners.

Seventy-one players reached agreements with their teams ahead of yesterday’s exchange of figures, leaving just 38 to swap with their clubs. That’s down from 128 players who filed for arbitration last Friday.

The Giants offered $8 million to Lincecum, who has won consecutive NL Cy Young Awards.

Hernandez asked for the second-highest figure, $11.5 million, and the Mariners offered $7.2 million. He is due in Seattle for a physical needed to finalize his contract, a person familiar with the negotiations said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet finished.

Also yesterday, Lincecum agreed to pay $513 to resolve marijuana charges against him in Washington state. He originally faced two misdemeanor charges of marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession stemming from a traffic stop on Oct. 30. The charges were reduced to a civil infraction.

Plethora of deals

Among the players sources said reached one-year deals with the teams to avoid arbitration were shortstop Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks); infielder Rickie Weeks and center fielder Carlos Gomez (Brewers); shortstop Jason Bartlett, righthander Matt Garza, and lefthanded reliever J.P. Howell (Rays); third baseman Alex Gordon (Royals); reliever Rafael Perez (Indians); outfielder Ryan Ludwick (Cardinals); and pitchers Jason Frasor, Brian Tallet, Jeremy Accardo, Shawn Camp, and Casey Janssen (Blue Jays).

Also: first baseman James Loney, catcher Russell Martin, and relievers George Sherrill and Hong-Chih Kuo (Dodgers); pitcher Jered Weaver, catcher Mike Napoli, infielder Howie Kendrick, and outfielder Reggie Willits (Angels); outfielder Josh Hamilton (Rangers); lefthander John Danks (White Sox); outfielder Luke Scott (Orioles); reliever Chad Durbin (Phillies); outfielder Jeff Francoeur (Mets); pitcher Carl Pavano, shortstop J.J. Hardy, and outfielder Delmon Young (Twins); outfielder Josh Willingham (Nationals); and pitcher Zach Duke (Pirates).
