Chiefs expected to name Weis coordinator

All signs are pointing toward former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis becoming offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coach Todd Haley, an old friend of Weis, said yesterday that he would be a “good fit’’ calling plays for Kansas City, and Weis later told the AP “there is action going on’’ between him and the Chiefs.

“Until a deal is done, I really can’t say anything,’’ Weis said.

ESPN.com was reporting last night that Weis had already accepted the job.

Weis also has a relationship with Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, who was director of player personnel in New England when Weis was offensive coordinator for the Patriots’ Super Bowl teams.

No word on Mangini

Embattled Browns coach Eric Mangini left the team’s training facility late yesterday afternoon after presumably meeting with new team president Mike Holmgren. Mangini did not stop to speak with reporters outside.

Team spokesman Bill Bonsiewicz would not confirm if Mangini, who is fighting for his job, got to make his case to Holmgren. On Tuesday, his first day running the Browns, Holmgren said Mangini had a legitimate shot of returning for a second season in Cleveland.

Meanwhile, Pro Bowl return specialist Josh Cribbs believes it is “unlikely’’ he’ll play another game for the Browns. Insulted by their latest contract offer, Cribbs intends to clean out his locker. “I’m hurt because I don’t want to play for nobody else,’’ he said. “But the way they’re talking, they’re leaving me no choice.’’
