Dedication opens crossing between Maine, Canada

CALAIS, Maine - The new border crossing complex between Maine and New Brunswick is now officially open.

Top federal and state officials attended the dedication of the 54-acre, $125 million Calais-St. Stephen border crossing yesterday morning.

The facility opened to traffic last week.

The project was paid for by the two national governments and the state of Maine and the province of New Brunswick.

Officials said about 74,000 commercial vehicles and 879,000 passenger vehicles passed theold Calais border crossing in2008.

The old crossing will remain open for noncommercial traffic, officials said.
