Friday Night Lights 9 p.m., DirecTV

Most viewers won’t be seeing this fourth season until it airs this summer on NBC, even though DirecTV is airing it exclusively now. I’ve seen the first four episodes, and they are remarkably good. What can I say? This show continues to be soulful, emotionally honest, naturalistic, and willing to stare issues of race in the face. Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler, above) is trying to make it work at East Dillon High, which enables the writers to bring in some new characters to mix with the old. Landry, Tim, Matt, and Julie are back. And yes, Buddy, too.

Modern Family 9 p.m., Channel 5

This sitcom is turning out to be among the best shows of the season. Each of the three families has been vivid, lovable, and funny from the first episode on. My favorite character, as I’ve mentioned here already, is the unique Manny, played by Rico Rodriguez. But Ty Burrell as Phil the “cool dad’’ is a close second. Tonight, the show brings in Edward Norton for a guest stint. Above (from left): Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, and Burrell.

Law & Order: Special VictimsUnit 9 p.m., Channel 7

Benson’s a murder suspect. That plot never gets old - because it was DOA.

The New Adventures of Old Christine 8 p.m., Channel 4

It’s Jennifer Grey. Really.

In the Spotlight With Robin Roberts 10 p.m., Channel 5

Janet Jackson. (Sigh. Still too soon.)

Mary Queen of Shops 9 p.m., BBC America

She used to be Mary K. Mart.

Glee 9 p.m., Channel 25

Finn has dinner with Quinn’s parents. Sounds more like “Gleew.’’
