Dangerous germs found on beaches

SAN FRANCISCO - Dangerous staph bacteria have been found in sand and water for the first time at five public beaches along the coast of Washington, and scientists think the state is not the only one with the problem. The germ MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was once rarely seen outside of hospitals but increasingly is spreading elsewhere. The germ, which causes skin infections as well as pneumonia, is spread through human contact.

Shooting suspect injures self in jail

OWOSSO - A man accused of fatally shooting an abortion protester and business owner in Michigan was taken from jail to a hospital yesterday with a self-inflicted wound to his arm, officials said. Harlan Drake, 33, cut his arm near the wrist but was expected to recover. Drake is charged with gunning down the abortion protester and gravel pit owner in Owosso on Friday.
