THE FISHER KING 
(Encore on Comcast) Terry Gilliam tries to go commercial in this big, dark, feel-good movie, but can’t help being himself. The result, in this tale of homeless trauma victim Robin Williams and defrocked shock jock Jeff Bridges (above right, with Williams) helping one another back to life with wonderful support from Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer, is messy but magical, keeping you on its side until it delivers the big payoff it promises. THE EDGE 
(Encore on Comcast) Mostly corny mano-a-mano stuff in the Yukon wilderness. Billionaire Anthony Hopkins and cocky fashion photographer Alec Baldwin refrain from killing one another over Elle Macpherson because they need each other to get out alive after their plane crashes. Made watchable by Hopkins’s underplaying, by spectacular scenery, and by the John Wayne of Kodiak bears. (R; runs through Oct. 1)
ZERO EFFECT
(Encore on Comcast) Uneven but promising debut by writer-director Jake Kasdan. He’d clearly rather see a love story than a detective story, so he has Bill Pullman’s reclusive sleuth fall for a woman (Kim Dickens) he’d normally have his go-between (Ben Stiller) trail. It’s just original enough to keep you watching, despite a lapse into standard genre moves and some overacting by Pullman. (R; runs through Oct. 1)
