Yankees hit White Sox hard

Mitre, Gaudin keep Chicago scuffling

Sergio Mitre sure looked a little rusty at the start. He bounced a pitch to the backstop to the first batter, then did it again with the next guy.

Maybe that just meant his sinker was supercharged.

Mitre shook off an extended layoff and combined with Chad Gaudin on a one-hitter to lead New York past the slumping Chicago White Sox, 10-0, yesterday at Yankee Stadium.

Working for the first time since a relief outing eight days ago, Mitre (3-1) was perfect until Jim Thome ripped a bad-hop double past first baseman Mark Teixeira with one out in the fifth.

“Definitely, it was a lot better than what I’ve been doing,’’ said Mitre.

The White Sox made three errors on a misty afternoon, and second baseman Jayson Nix’s second miscue of the game was the team’s AL-high 100th of the season. Right fielder Jermaine Dye slipped and fell while retrieving Hideki Matsui’s double - and still made the relay from flat on his back.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was disgusted after a sixth loss in seven games. “I’m embarrassed. Everybody in that room should be embarrassed,’’ he said, mixing in a few expletives but never shouting. “When you have more errors than hits, you better look yourself in the mirror.’’

Mitre left with a forearm bruise in the seventh after being nailed by A.J. Pierzynski’s liner, and Gaudin closed with 2 2/3 hitless innings. Mitre walked Brent Lillibridge to lead off the seventh and Pierzynski followed with a liner up the middle that hit Mitre before he could get his glove up. Mitre recovered the ball behind the mound and threw out Pierzynski.

Rangers 3, Twins 0 - Scott Feldman (14-4) gave the Rangers another strong start, holding host Minnesota scoreless into the sixth inning and helping Texas to remain 2 1/2 games behind the Red Sox in the AL wild-card chase.

Rays 3, Tigers 1 - David Price allowed one run and five hits over 7 1/3 innings, the longest outing of his young career, to lead Tampa Bay in Detroit.

Indians 5, Orioles 3 - Andy Marte hit a three-run homer following a rain delay of 1 hour 37 minutes, Jhonny Peralta also connected, and Cleveland rallied to win in Baltimore.

Athletics 4, Angels 3 - Rajai Davis tied the score with a two-run single in the seventh and pinch runner Eric Patterson scored the go-ahead run on an infield out in the eighth, leading Oakland to victory in Los Angeles.

Mariners 8, Royals 4 - Mike Sweeney’s two-run double sparked a four-run first inning and host Seattle went on to beat Kansas City.

Giants 5, Rockies 3 - Barry Zito carried a shutout into the ninth, Pablo Sandoval hit a home run, and host San Francisco got within a game of Colorado for the NL wild card.
