LIBERTY HEIGHTS

(Encore on Comcast) As he did in “Diner,’’ “Tin Men,’’ and “Avalon,’’ Barry Levinson returns to the 1950s Baltimore of his youth, this time with more focus on societal context and currents. The characters seem more like historical markers and in some ways less idiosyncratic than in his earlier films, but Levinson’s canvas is broader and more deeply evocative of time and place than ever, which is the most moving thing about the film. (R; runs through Aug. 13)

FANBOYS

(Comcast Movies and Events) A rowdy road comedy about a quartet of “Star Wars’’ geeks intent on breaking into George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch in 1998 to get a sneak peek at “Episode I.’’ Genial, potty-mouthed, crass, and rather sweet. Starring Jay Baruchel, Sam Huntington, Kristen Bell, and a lot of Very Special Appearances. (PG-13; runs through Aug. 13)

HAMLET

(Encore on Comcast) Is this a demographic I see before me? Mel Gibson as an intense Dane in a kinetic film carried more by close-ups and action than by language. (PG; runs through Aug. 13)
