Letter from Lincoln added to archives

WASHINGTON -The National Archives yesterday added to its collection a short letter written by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 to help the son-in-law of an Oregon senator.

In the letter, Lincoln asked his treasury secretary, Salmon Chase, to allow the fired head of the US Mint in San Francisco to review the charges that led to his removal.

The letter shows Lincoln's interest, "even in the midst of the Civil War, in political issues on the West Coast," said James Hastings, director of access programs at the archives.
