Pharmacists want CVS investigated

INDIANAPOLIS - A pharmacists association yesterday accused CVS Caremark Corp. of waging unfair competition and asked for a Federal Trade Commission investigation.

The National Community Pharmacists Association has accused Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS of using sensitive patient information and copayment manipulation to steer patients to its pharmacies and drug mail-order businesses. The Alexandria, Va. association also has talked to members of Congress.

"We believe CVS Caremark is taking away fundamental rights of patients to choose their own pharmacy, and that message is getting a very receptive ear on Capitol Hill," said John Coster, the association's senior vice president.

CVS said in an e-mailed statement the association mischaracterizes its business practices.
