Favre freed up
Brett Favre
was released from the reserve-retired list by the Jets, making the three-time MVP quarterback free to sign with any team if he decides to again come out of retirement.
The move last night means the Jets no longer hold the rights to Favre, who spent one disappointing season in New York. The 39-year-old Favre had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.
Foote in limbo
Steelers linebacker Larry Foote told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he wants to be a starter and added that director of football operations Kevin Colbert told him yesterday the Steelers were trying to trade him but would release him if that didn't work out . . . Chargers running back Darren Sproles signed the $6,621,000 million contract he was tendered as the team's franchise player. Sproles had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent before the Chargers tagged him . . . According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Bears linebacker Lance Briggs told autograph seekers at an appearance Saturday in Algonquin, Ill., that he cut his right hand while attempting to shave with a straight-edged razor. He made the appearance wearing a heavy wrap on his hand . . . The Saints released veteran defensive tackle Brian Young, who's had left knee problems.
NU's Parks signs
Northeastern defensive back Cord Parks signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent. Parks was a four-year letterman for the Huskies from 2005-08, playing in 45 games . . . The Bengals agreed to terms with University of Texas free agent reciever Quan Cosby . . . Redskins draft pick Cody Glenn admitted he lied when he told reporters that his suspension at Nebraska last season was for selling football tickets. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini suspended Glenn in November for the last three games, saying the linebacker violated team rules. Glenn refused to disclose the real reason . . . Bills defensive back Donte Whitner pleaded not guilty to charges he forced his way past police during an altercation at a Cleveland nightclub. The former Ohio State player was charged April 13 with aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
