Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller stepped to the top of the crease to try to stop Kovalchuk, whose wrister went under the goalie's legs. The goal was Kovalchuk's 41st and gave him 30 in 37 games.
Buffalo ended a three-game winning streak. With 83 points, the Sabres are 4 behind ninth-place Florida and 5 behind Montreal and the playoff cutoff in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta has won three straight and 10 of 13.
Capitals 5, Islanders 3 - Mike Green's two power-play goals less than 1 1/2 minutes apart in the third period and Alex Ovechkin's NHL-leading 54th tally helped host Washington beat New York to near a second consecutive Southeast Division title.
Green's 18 man-advantage goals set a franchise record for a defenseman, breaking the mark of 16 held by Scott Stevens. Ovechkin has 33 home goals, one more than the Capitals record he set in 2007-08.
Washington trailed, 2-0, early in the second period, then 3-2 after Richard Park scored for New York 2:12 into the third.
Blackhawks 3, Blues 1 - Nikolai Khabibulin made 16 saves, and Jonathan Toews, Samuel Pahlsson, and Colin Fraser scored for host Chicago, which beat St. Louis and snapped the Blues' five-game winning streak.
The Blackhawks moved within 1 point of clinching their first playoff berth since 2001-02 and their second in 11 seasons. Chicago also jumped a point ahead of Calgary and into fourth place in the Western Conference.
Coyotes 3, Avalanche 0 - Al Montoya made 23 saves to earn a shutout in his first NHL game, Mikkel Boedker and Shane Doan scored a goal each, and Phoenix beat host Colorado.
Montoya, recalled from the AHL March 23, led the Coyotes to their third win in four games.
Andrew Raycroft had 32 saves for the Avalanche.
