For Brodeur, nothing can beat shutout 100

Martin Brodeur has found the New Jersey Devils have changed during his almost four-month injury absence. This is a team that not only plays defense, it scores early and often.

Brodeur earned his 100th NHL regular-season shutout with a 27-save effort, and the Devils extended their lead in the Atlantic Division with a 3-0 victory over the second-place Philadelphia Flyers yesterday in Newark.

The shutout was the second in three games since Brodeur returned Thursday and moved him within three of tying Terry Sawchuk's mark of 103. It was also Brodeur's 547th career victory, moving him within four of tying Patrick Roy's league record.

Brodeur missed 50 games following surgery to repair a torn left biceps.

"It's a big number, it's kind of hard to believe," Brodeur said of his shutout total. "You get to different numbers and at times you think, 'OK, it's just another one.' When you get to a round number, it looks more impressive."

Brodeur, 36, has been very impressive in his return, winning three times in four days.

"This is as good as it gets," he said.

Jamie Langenbrunner, Brian Gionta, and Johnny Oduya scored as the Devils won for the eighth time in 10 games to open a nine-point lead in the division with 19 games left in the regular season.

The loss was the fourth in 11 games (7-3-1) for the Flyers, who welcomed back Danny Briere after he missed 36 games following abdominal-groin surgery.

Penguins 4, Stars 1 - Scoring leader Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists, Marc-Andre Fleury made 20 saves, and visiting Pittsburgh won its third in a row without captain Sidney Crosby (left groin injury).

The Stars lost their season-high fifth straight, scoring six goals during their slide.

Panthers 6, Capitals 2 - Stephen Weiss, Bryan McCabe, and Jay Bouwmeester scored power-play goals in the first period, and visiting Florida held Alex Ovechkin without a point until the final minute in beating Washington.

The Capitals - coming off a rousing overtime victory Saturday in Boston - heard boos in their own building and pulled starting goalie Jose Theodore after falling behind by three goals in the opening period.

Lightning 8, Flames 6 - Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis each had two goals and an assist and Mark Recchi had five assists to help Tampa Bay win in Calgary.

Calgary captain Jarome Iginla had two goals and three assists to move past Theo Fleury and into the top spot on the Flames' career scoring list with 834 points in 922 career games.

Canucks 3, Blue Jackets 1 - Sami Salo and Ryan Kelser scored power-play goals 1:47 apart late in the first period and early in the second - with Rick Nash in the penalty box for both goals - as host Vancouver won for the 10th time in 12 games.

Blackhawks 4, Kings 2 - Antti Niemi made 22 saves in his first NHL start to lead host Chicago.
