Broken ribs KO Eagles' Westbrook

October 11, 2008|Associated Press

All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook will miss his second game in three weeks when the Philadelphia Eagles visit San Francisco tomorrow.

Westbrook broke two ribs in the Eagles' 23-17 loss to Washington last Sunday, though he kept playing and finished the game. He sat out a 24-20 loss at Chicago Sept. 28 because of an ankle injury.

Two-time Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews (back) and wide receiver Reggie Brown (groin) also won't play.

"Brian wants to go. He's in the mind-set that he wants to play, but it's a decision that I've got to make," coach Andy Reid said yesterday. "He's a tough nut and I know that."

Westbrook leads the Eagles (2-3) with 194 yards rushing and has six touchdowns. He should return Oct. 26 after a bye week.

Quarterback shuffles

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has not been cleared to play against Green Bay, meaning the Seahawks will likely start Charlie Frye, who took the majority of snaps in practice. Hasselbeck bruised his right knee last week against the Giants. The 1-3 Seahawks will also likely be without receiver Deion Branch (bruised heel), who didn't practice all week . . . Despite not making a single throw in practice this week, Aaron Rodgers (sprained right shoulder) is prepared to start for the Packers in Seattle, according to coach Mike McCarthy . . . The Bengals will start former Harvard standout Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB as Carson Palmer continues to rest a sore right elbow. Palmer may play in relief.

Winslow hospitalized

Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow will spend a second night in the hospital with an undisclosed illness that could keep him out of Monday night's game against the Giants. Winslow was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic Thursday. He practiced Monday but had been feeling ill for several days and the team sent him to the doctor for further tests and evaluation. Citing patient privacy laws, coach Romeo Crennel did not provide specifics on Winslow's illness. "His arms and legs aren't falling off or anything like that," said Crennel . . . Falcons receiver Roddy White is questionable for tomorrow's game against Chicago after missing another practice. White was knocked out of Wednesday's practice after hitting his head in a collision with safety Lawyer Milloy.

Some fine messes

Former Broncos running back Travis Henry is scheduled to appear in US District Court in Billings, Mont., Tuesday on cocaine trafficking charges. He is expected to enter a plea to a three-count indictment charging him with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine in the Billings area in 2006 . . . Ronnie Brown and Dolphins teammates Vernon Carey and Ikechuku Ndukwe were fined $10,000 each by the NFL for excessive celebrating. After Brown scored a touchdown Sunday, the trio performed a dance shuffle in the end zone . . . The NFL fined Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield $10,000 for his celebration of a touchdown Monday night. Winfield returned a blocked field goal for a score, then jumped onto the goal post and slid down it like a fire pole. Two other Vikings were also penalized. Linebacker Chad Greenway was fined $7,500 for his facemask pull of Reggie Bush and Robert Ferguson was docked $5,000 for a late hit.
