Jones deal a work in progress

The Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans are on the clock with their Adam "Pacman" Jones trade.

How fast that clock is ticking depends on who you talk to.

The deal still wasn't finalized yesterday, two days after the teams agreed in principle with the NFL draft hours away. The Titans are supposed to get Dallas's fourth-round pick and another pick next year for the rights to the suspended cornerback.

"Clearly it's got to be done tomorrow or else it becomes academic," said Jones's agent, Manny Arora.

Not so fast, says Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple. He said the teams were working out details and the deal didn't have to be complete before the draft.

The fourth round of the draft isn't until tomorrow.

"There's no set timetable or anything," Dalrymple said.

The Titans declined to provide any update on the trade's progress. On Thursday, general manager Mike Reinfeldt cautioned that it was a complicated deal.

If the Jones deal goes through, the Cowboys still don't know if he'll play for them this season. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he'll decide whether to reinstate Jones by training camp in July and that any trade won't influence him.

Jones has been arrested six times and has been involved in 12 incidents requiring police action since being the top defensive player taken in the 2005 draft. The accumulation led Goodell to suspend Jones for the 2007 season.

If Goodell doesn't let Pacman return in the 2008 season, the Cowboys would get back a 2009 selection. They're also expected to be giving him a non-guaranteed contract.

Parcells dealing
The Cowboys traded linebacker Akin Ayodele and tight end Anthony Fasano to the Dolphins for a fourth-round draft pick, a person familiar with the deal said.

The person didn't want to be identified because the Dolphins and Cowboys hadn't confirmed the trade. The Dolphins have repeatedly tapped the Dallas pipeline since the arrival of former Cowboys coach Bill Parcells in December to run Miami's football operations.

The draft pick is No. 100 overall tomorrow.

Ayodele has been a starter for the past five seasons and made 55 tackles last year. His spot with the Cowboys may be filled by Zach Thomas, acquired after the Dolphins released him in February.

Fasano, a second-round pick in 2006, has made 14 receptions in each of his first two NFL seasons and is expected to contend for a starting job with the Dolphins.

No bail in Taylor case
Miami Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy denied bail for Jason Scott Mitchell, one of the suspects in the slaying of Redskins star Sean Taylor.

Murphy noted that the 20-year-old Mitchell and three other suspects allegedly hatched their plot in the Fort Myers area and drove across the state intending to burglarize Taylor's Miami-area home.

"Youth and guns have been such a prevalent issue of concern in our community. Now we're getting it imported from other parts of the state," Murphy said at a hearing. "I'm not sure any form of release would adequately protect the public."

Murphy's denial of bail for Mitchell came after the suspect's mother, Louise Robertson, and several other relatives came to court wearing T-shirts bearing his picture. Robertson's black shirt said "Mama's Baby" on the front and "Free My Son" on the back.
