Lakers spoil Marion's debut

Shawn Marion drove for dunks, found teammates for easy baskets, and coaxed the Miami Heat into running more than usual.

All good things.

Not enough, though, for Miami to escape the worst rut in franchise history.

Kobe Bryant scored 33 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers used a 16-2 second-half run to pull away and beat the Heat, 104-94, yesterday in Miami's first home game of its post-Shaquille O'Neal era.

Marion had 15 points and 14 rebounds in his first appearance with the Heat, who've lost 22 of their last 23 games - something no Miami team has ever done. The expansion Heat opened 1-21.

"We showed good things and there were times that you could tell everyone was comfortable with everyone at the same time," Marion said. "We left it all on the floor. That's all you can ask. I think we just ran out of gas at the end there, and that's what we have to build on."

Mark Blount scored 22 points for Miami, which had Marion and Marcus Banks for the first time since getting them from the Phoenix Suns in exchange for O'Neal.

Dwyane Wade finished with 19 points and nine assists, Dorell Wright scored 15 and Jason Williams added 10.

Didn't matter. Bryant and the Lakers were too much. Bryant shot 10 for 15 and Lamar Odom finished with 15 points and 18 rebounds for Los Angeles.

"This is the hump game and it was a good game to win," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We didn't play particularly well but we were able to win the game."

Nets 101, Mavericks 82 - Vince Carter scored 25 of his 29 points after nearly being knocked out by an elbow to the head, and host New Jersey ran off 21 straight points to stun Dallas.

Richard Jefferson added 19 points and Jason Kidd put aside trade rumors once again to finish with 13 points, 14 assists and 6 rebounds.

The 21-point run bridged the end of the second quarter and start of the third, and it was part of a 36-6 spurt that turned a 36-25 deficit into a 61-42 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Carter was elbowed in the right side of his face by Brandon Bass while trying to steal the ball from the Mavericks' forward.

Carter lay on the floor for about two minutes and seemed woozy when helped to his feet by trainer Tim Walsh. He was helped to the bench and then went to the locker room for more attention with 8:23 left until halftime.

Nuggets 113, Cavaliers 83 - Carmelo Anthony scored 27 points, All-Star sidekick Allen Iverson added 25 and visiting Denver rolled over listless and limping Cleveland.

Anthony didn't have to play in the fourth quarter and improved to 8-2 in his pro career against good friend LeBron James, who scored 30 points but got little help from a Cleveland team missing four key players, including two starters.

Pistons 113, Bobcats 87 - Tayshaun Prince scored 14 of his 21 points in the first quarter and host Detroit won its eighth straight game. Detroit led, 27-7, after just nine minutes, aided by Charlotte missing 12 of its first 14 shots.

Suns 108, Wizards 107 - Amare Stoudemire had 31 points, including two game-clinching free throws with 7.5 seconds to play, and host Phoenix handed Washington its seventh straight loss.

Raptors 105, Timberwolves 82 - Andrea Bargnani scored 16 points and Jose Calderon had 15 points and 10 assists for his second consecutive double-double to help visiting Toronto beat Minnesota.
