McNabb spreads blame

QB: It's unfair to point finger at him

Donovan McNabb doesn't miss blocks or run wrong routes, and he can't be held responsible for the defense allowing points.

So the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback feels it's unfair to blame him for the Philadelphia Eagles' 3-5 start.

"I'm definitely not the whole reason why we lost these games," McNabb said yesterday. "Can I help? Yes, I can. But I'm not fully to blame for everything that goes on around here. I can help, but I'm not that main solution. I'm a piece of the puzzle, and when the puzzle's put together, then we'll have success."

Just two days after coach Andy Reid left the door slightly open for a change at his position, McNabb seemed a bit defensive.

"We all have to play well," he said. "We all have to do our jobs individually. If we all step up and do our job, then we wouldn't be sitting here right now [at 3-5]. But I'm definitely not the single reason for what's going on right now."

Asked Monday if McNabb would remain the starter for the rest of the season, barring injury, Reid said: "That's where I'm looking at things. Again, nothing is guaranteed."

Burress practices

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress practiced on a limited basis, less than an hour after coach Tom Coughlin said a persistent ankle injury would prevent him from working out. With the Giants (6-2) coming off a bye week, Burress asked Coughlin if he could try to practice for the first time since Sept. 12. Burress has caught 37 passes for 564 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns on Sundays. The Giants have a showdown with the Dallas Cowboys (7-1) Sunday . . . The Saints' Reggie Bush sat out practice with a wrap on his left knee, which he said he bruised late in the Saints' 41-24 victory over Jacksonville last week. Bush participated in a walkthrough and said he expects to play Sunday vs. St. Louis . . . Justin Smiley, the 49ers' starting right guard, will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery after dislocating the joint during his club's loss at Atlanta last weekend.

Brooks out for year

Bengals middle linebacker Ahmad Brooks will have surgery for a torn groin muscle and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. He hurt his groin in Week 2 and hasn't played since . . . Bengals receiver Chris Henry allegedly was involved in an altercation with a parking attendant on the eve of rejoining the Bengals from his eight-game suspension. Henry practiced and will be eligible to play Sunday in Baltimore. Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him for the first half of the season for repeatedly violating the NFL's conduct policy.
