Rags to Riches upset in Gazelle

Lear's Princess overtook Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches in the stretch and pulled off an upset yesterday in the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park.

Rags to Riches, one of racing's most popular stars after becoming the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont, was sent off as the 2-5 favorite.

Ridden by John Velazquez, Rags to Riches moved into the lead around the final turn, but Lear's Princess caught her midway through the stretch and won by a half-length, covering the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.86.

Lear's Princess, ridden by Eibar Coa, paid $6.20, $2.30, and $2.10 as the second choice in the five-horse field, with Rags to Riches returning $2.10 and $2.10. Tough Tiz's Sis paid $2.40 to show.

In other races, trainer Barclay Tagg won two stakes, with Tale of Ekati ($8.70) taking the $250,000 Futurity for 2-year-olds and Dance Away Capote ($20.40) capturing the $100,000 Noble Damsel for fillies and mares on the turf. Proud Spell ($5.40), trained by Larry Jones, won the $250,000 Matron for 2-year-old fillies.

'Monkey' disappoints

The Green Monkey sure didn't look like a $16 million horse in his greatly anticipated debut at Belmont Park.

The most expensive horse purchased at auction started slowly and never mounted a serious threat, finishing third in a 6-furlong maiden special weight.

The Green Monkey was sent off as the 2-5 favorite despite taking on five experienced rivals. Roi Maudit ($22.80) won, with Sixhirteen second. The Green Monkey was 7 lengths behind the winner.

"I figured he would be a big favorite because of all the publicity he's gotten, but I don't think he ran so badly," trainer Todd Pletcher said.
