ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Garret Anderson drove in a team-record 10 runs, including a grand slam and a three-run homer, in the Los Angeles Angels' 18-9 rout of the New York Yankees last night.
Anderson became the 12th player in major league history to have 10 RBIs in a game. He was the first to reach double digits since the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez did it against the Angels April 26, 2005.
Rodriguez hit a pair of solo shots, with his 42d of the season coming in the ninth off Marc Gwyn.
The major league record of 12 RBIs is shared by the St. Louis Cardinals' Jim Bottomley (1924) and Mark Whiten (1993). The AL record of 11 was set by Tony Lazzeri of the Yankees on May 24, 1936.
Anderson's eighth career slam came against Sean Henn in the sixth for an 18-5 lead. The runs are the most the Angels have scored against the Yankees.
The slugger did all his damage in the first six innings and finished 4 for 6. He hit a three-run shot in the third off Edwar Ramirez.
Anderson had a two-run double off Mike Mussina in the first inning, and drove in another run with a double in the second. Mussina (8-9) lasted only 1 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks.
During a wild first three innings, the Angels and Yankees combined for 17 runs, 12 by the Angels.
The Angels' Kelvim Escobar (14-6) allowed five runs on five hits in six innings.
The Angels scored five runs in the second, third, and sixth innings.
