Michigan thwarts Harvard

Ice-cold Crimson simply outclassed

Ron Coleman scored a career-high 20 points and Courtney Sims added 12 to lead Michigan to an 82-50 rout over Harvard last night at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Freshman Ekpe Udoh also had 11 points for the Wolverines (5-0), who were equally impressive defensively.

After trailing, 6-5, Michigan took control of the game with a 26-6 run. The Wolverines held the Crimson to 6-of-27 shooting from the field and forced 12 turnovers in the first half. During one stretch, Harvard went 6:29 without scoring a point.

Michigan continued its defensive push in the second half, causing another 13 turnovers and holding Harvard to just 12 field goals.

Evan Harris and Jim Goffredo each had 16 points for the Crimson (1-2).

Connecticut 88, Central Arkansas 59 -- Freshman Jerome Dyson scored 20 points as the 21st-ranked Huskies routed the Bears in the opening round of the Hispanic College Fund Classic at Hartford.

The Huskies (2-0) used a smothering man-to-man defense and speedy transition game to run away from the Bears (1-2), a team playing its first season in Division 1.

Mississippi 70, Fairfield 67 -- Clarence Sanders scored 21 points and Bam Doyne had 20 points with 12 rebounds as the Rebels hung on in Hartford.

Greg Nero led the Stags with 19 points.

Kentucky 79, Mississippi Valley St. 56 -- Ramel Bradley had a career-high 21 points and the 22d-ranked Wildcats started with a 15-0 run in defeating the visiting Delta Devils in Tubby Smith's 500th game as a college coach.

Smith, now in his 16th year as a head coach and 10th at Kentucky, improved his record to 367-133.

Ohio St. 74, E. Kentucky 45 -- At Columbus, Ohio, freshman sub Daequan Cook hit his first seven shots and finished with 22 points to power the fifth-ranked Buckeyes past the Colonels.

LSU 96, Nicholls St. 42 -- Senior Darnell Lazare scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his first double-double and propel the seventh-ranked Tigers past the Colonels at Baton Rouge, La.

Alabama 71, Middle Tennessee 62 -- Ronald Steele had 20 points and four assists to lead the No. 10 Crimson Tide over the Blue Raiders at the Paradise Jam tournament at Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands.

Texas A&M 94, Lamar 60 -- Joseph Jones scored 19 points and the No. 12 Aggies rolled past the Cardinal in the inaugural Shelby Metcalf Classic at College Station, Texas.

Texas 77, St. John's 76 -- Kevin Durant had 29 points and fellow freshman D.J. Augustin added 17 to propel the 19th-ranked Longhorns in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Women East Carolina 80, Harvard 71 -- Jasmine Young scored a game-high 22 points and Jessica Slack had 17 points and seven rebounds as the Pirates dumped the Crimson in the TD Banknorth Classic at Burlington, Vt.
