More than one way to carve a turkey

There's something special about Thanksgiving in New England -- after all, that's where the tradition began (although some will argue the point). While most people will gather in the homes of family members, an increasingly sizable minority will spend the day in cozy inns and digging into a professionally prepared Thanksgiving dinner. Here are some New England lodging spots with packages that promise a memorable holiday:

The Woodstock Inn in central Vermont considers Thanksgiving dinner just the start of things. The four-day weekend will be filled with family activities, including the Woodstock Crafts Fair and a 19th-century Thanksgiving celebration at the Billings Farm and Museum. Packages start at $299 a night and may include a free fourth night.

Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vt., has a package featuring a multicourse Thanksgiving dinner, three nights' lodging, and daily breakfast, afternoon tea and cookies, and hors d'oeuvres. Rates from $276 per person.

The White Elephant Hotel on Nantucket offers a Thanksgiving Celebration Package Nov. 24-27 starting at $222 per room per night, with half off the price of a second room. Dinner will feature roast turkey, naturally, but guests also have the option of choosing lobster, beef tenderloin, or salmon. There will also be roasted butternut squash soup, seafood chowder, cranberry bread pudding, chocolate turtle cake, and, not surprisingly, pumpkin pie. If you haven't had your fill of turkey, the hotel provides a ''Turkey and Trimmings Lunch" on Friday.
