Northeastern can't avoid being tripped on road

Davon Vinson accounted for 255 total yards and Shelton Sampson ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns to lift Northwestern State to a 14-12 victory over Northeastern yesterday in Natchitoches, La.

Vinson rushed for 137 yards, including a 44-yard gain. He also completed 11 of 16 passes for 118 yards and was intercepted once.

Sampson's first touchdown put Northwestern (4-3) ahead, 7-3, in the first quarter. But Northeastern (1-7) closed to 7-6 in the second quarter on Miro Kesic's second field goal of the first half. His kicks went for 27 yards and 30 yards.

Sampson's second score put the Demons ahead, 14-6, in the third quarter and Northwestern was able to hold on from there, conceding only one more score, on Corey Parks's 15-yard touchdown reception from Anthony Orio.

Orio was 5-of-12 passing for 61 yards. Anthony Riley rushed for 99 yards on 11 carries for the Huskies, with nearly half of those yards coming on a 48-yard gain.

Maine 25, Delaware 13 -- Montell Owens rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns as the Black Bears rallied for two fourth-quarter scores to defeat the visiting Blue Hens.

Maine (3-5, 1-4 Atlantic 10) got a first-quarter touchdown when Ron Whitcomb connected with Kevin McMahan from 47 yards. On Maine's next possession, Owens capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and the Bears held a 13-0 lead.

Delaware (4-4, 1-4) got on the board late in the first half after a 19-play, 55-yard drive that spanned more than 10 minutes. Omar Cuff scored from 1 yard.

The Blue Hens tied the game at 13 after a field goal in the third and another early in the fourth.

After a turnover, Maine marched 88 yards and took the lead for good when Whitcomb found McMahan again, this time from 6 yards. Owens added his second touchdown less than a minute later after Maine's defense forced a fumble.

Villanova 35, William & Mary 21 -- Frank Jankowski threw three touchdown passes as the host Wildcats built a 28-point lead en route to the upset of the ninth-ranked Tribe.

Jankowski threw scoring passes of 15 yards to J.J. Outlaw and 14 yards to Anton Ridley in the first half. He added a 23-yarder to John Dieser after the break.

Martin Gibson scored on a 30-yard run for the Wildcats and Rodney Badger capped the scoring with a 15-yard interception return for a touchdown for Villanova (4-4, 2-3).

William & Mary (5-3, 3-2) got a pair of touchdowns off interceptions in the fourth quarter. Trevor McLaurin scored on a 37-yard return and James Miller returned a pick 80 yards for a score.

Hofstra 38, Rhode Island 24 -- Anton Clarkson passed for 415 yards and ran for a touchdown as the Pride beat the Rams in South Kingstown, R.I.

Clarkson completed 29 of 36 passes for Hofstra (5-3, 3-2). Devale Ellis caught 11 passes for 138 yards and wideout Charles Sullivan added 116 yards on five receptions.

Joe Casey carried 28 times for 170 yards for URI (4-5, 2-4).

Richmond 18, James Madison 15 -- At Harrisonburg, Va., Tim Hightower ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Spiders edged the 17th-ranked Dukes.

Hightower had touchdowns of 19 and 1 yards. Joseph Fore added field goals of 23 and 34 yards for Richmond (5-3, 5-1).

Justin Rascati threw two touchdown passes for James Madison (4-4, 2-3).
