Martin, Los Angeles architectural firm partner

LOS ANGELES -- J. Edward Martin, a partner in an architectural firm that helped design some of downtown's most recognizable buildings, died Monday at his home, his family's firm announced. He was 88.

Since its founding 98 years ago by Mr. Martin's father, Albert C. Martin Sr., AC Martin Partners has designed buildings that include the Million Dollar Theater, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Building, Arco Plaza, and the Union Bank Building.

Mr. Martin's father also collaborated on the design of Los Angeles City Hall in the late 1920s.

Mr. Martin and his brother, Albert Jr., took over management of the firm after World War II. Mr. Martin ran its management division. Albert Martin was the community and design expert.

Mr. J. Edward Martin served as managing director until 1986 and served as partner emeritus until retiring in 1997.

He also was a lieutenant in the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps during World War II.

The Structural Engineers Association of Southern California gave him a lifetime achievement award in 1996.
