Foghorns bleat on a wet night and the morning sun floods through a wall of windows.

Rates: There are 43 rooms in a main building, three smaller cottages, a beach house, and the Presidential Suite). Double-occupancy rates vary widely by season: corner suites $169-$319, garden suites $179-$339, loft suites $209-$379, garden cottages $199-$449, loft cottages $229-$459, direct ocean view cottages $239-$499, Beach House units $269-$559, Presidential Suite $409-$639.

Our room was $209 per night without dinner, $265 with dinner. Many packages are available. The Audubon Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dinner entrees $18-$30.

Directions: About a 2-hour drive from Boston. Follow Interstate 95 north to exit 7 on the Maine Turnpike in South Portland. Proceed 1 miles from the tollbooth to Route 1. Turn right (south) and at 0.8 miles, turn left at the traffic light onto Pleasant Hill Road. Continue to the end, turn left onto Route 77, and continue for 3 miles to Inn by the Sea.
